Elephants are a socially and spatially flexible species and sound is a crucial mode of communication. The most used call type is the low-frequency rumble, with fundamental frequencies within the infrasonic range generated by passive vocal fold vibration, following the same principle of voice production as in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Elephants possess vocal plasticity, allowing them to alter the structure of their calls in response to environmental and biological conditions. Although it is known that elephant calls convey biologically significant information, the diversity of their calls makes it difficult to decode and interpret their communication pattern. AI offers potential to analyze communication patterns that can be used to generate novel hypotheses about signal function and may ultimately aid in the design of controlled experiments to verify these hypotheses via synthesized signals. The central research question investigated in this project is: Can we leverage AI to decode elephant communication from large-scale data?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2026 Highlights at a Glance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dataset<\/strong>: We built a large, carefully curated dataset with 2,300+ high\u2011quality elephant rumbles, ready for modern analyses and machine learning.<br \/>\n<strong>First insights<\/strong>: Rumbles carry reliable cues about individual identity and broad age classes. We also see signs of two distinct \u201ccommunication modes\u201d in group contexts.<br \/>\n<strong>Synthetic calls<\/strong>: We can generate natural\u2011sounding synthetic elephant rumbles. Their perception is being tested via behavioural playbacks, following initial EEG measurements with trained elephants.<br \/>\n<strong>Tools &#038; fieldwork<\/strong>: New, easy\u2011to\u2011interpret analysis methods and a prototype for real\u2011time rumble detection support both research and practice.
